A high-pitched bell sounding more like an alarm than anything else rang through the corridor.

Straightening out, a man sighs deeply. He put the tools of his trade down on the table and goes to a murky sink to wash himself up to his elbows. He only has thirty minutes before he must resume his work, and boy does he need them today.

His client is a difficult one, very stubborn to say the least, but it is primordial that he gets results. The management will not accept failure with this client, or else he might be out of a job; and that, he really didn't want.

The man goes to his coat and pulls out a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from the right hand pocket. Advising a stool in the corner, he pulls it up close to the only window which had been cranked slightly open. With a sigh of satisfaction this time, he lights up his first cigarette of the day, inhaling deeply as the smoke passes in his lungs.

_May I have one?

Startled, the man looks at his client sitting on the high back chair across the room.

_ And why would I do that?

_You're on break, no?

_So…?

_ Well, so am I, if I am not mistaken.

The man thought it over for a moment.

_True.

_ I really could use one right now, we are gonna be at this all day you know. I'd like a little breather as well.

The man got up and pulled his stool closer to his client in the high-back chair. Without a word, he pulled another cigarette and lit it up. Then he gently put it in his clients' mouth.

His client inhaled deeply, with the same profound satisfaction that gives that first rush of nicotine of the day. From the corner of his bloodied and swollen mouth, the client looked at the man through his squinted eyes due to the fine blue smoke and said:

_Thanks.

And that was how on a beautiful spring day, the torturer and the tortured enjoyed their morning break.
Well I wanted to go dark, satirical and a horrid sense of humor.

I hope you like my take on having a break!

Nice twist in the end, I must say. The way you indicated dialogue threw me off a bit, but that's just because that's not how it's usually done. I love how it's all perfectly harmless right up until the end - and even then it doesn't get in your face; it just is what it is.
